Oily skin: what are the factors?
Oily skin, due to excess secretion of sebum, is linked to hormones, as the activity of sebaceous glands is hormone-dependent. An increase in hormones stimulates sebum secretion.
Sebum secretion is very high at birth, low in the pre-pubescent period, and at its peak between 15 and 30 years of age. It drops significantly after 50.
Time of the day factor:
Due to hormonal fluctuations during the day (high in the early morning, low in the evening and at night), the secretion of sebum varies.
Stress and anxiety stimulate sebaceous activity.
Heat and humidity both increase sebum secretion, also called hyper-seborrhea. The quality of air also plays a part, as micro-particles are deposited on the skin, blocking the pores. These factors can lead to greasy skin.
