Dark spots: what are they?
Melanin is the pigment responsible for dark skin colouring, and tanning of the skin (activated by the sun).
When the production of melanin is consistent and regular, the skin has an even colour.
Factors leading to dark spots:
UV rays, ageing and changing hormone levels can lead to excess melanin secretion, within the epidermis (the top layer of the skin).
This uneven secretion of melanin creates localised patches of colour, called dark spots.
